Many misconceptions about police in public mind are mainly due to lack of awareness on the part of public about police and their functioning. Even after sixty years of independence, common man is afraid to enter a police station. Therefore, public keeps police at an arms length and interact with the police only if it is unavoidable. Because of the lack of interaction between police and public, lot of doubts arise in the minds of public about various laws and procedures dealt with by the police. For a period of more than three years, the author enlightened the people by answering their questions through the columns of two leading newspapers of Bangalore relating to police laws and their way of functioning. Since Indian Panel Code (IPC) and Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) are common for the entire country, the answers can easily be applicable to the question of a reader from any part of India.
